The 1906 San Francisco earthquake was more than a regional disaster. Insurance payments, gold movements, tightening credit, and the collapse of the Knickerbocker Trust helped expose the fragility of the pre-Federal Reserve financial system.

This short visual history follows the period from the earthquake through the Panic of 1907 and the eventual creation of the Federal Reserve.
