EIA_SEARCH
Find actual EIA series codes within a selected data source.
Syntax
EIA_SEARCH(source,topic)Runnable example
EIA_SEARCH(INTL,World)Sources and arguments
Source selectors are PET, NG, ELEC, COAL, INTL, EMISS, TOTAL and STEO. The source selector is normalized to uppercase. Bare tokens and outer quotes are accepted; the topic is passed to the source-specific search.
Returns a metadata table with up to 50 rows, including provider code, name, units, frequency and search score. A score is a search-ranking measure, not data quality or statistical confidence. The command refreshes the source's bulk catalogue as needed; refresh failure can return a diagnostic string.
Effective discovery examples
EIA_SEARCH(INTL,World)
EIA_SEARCH(PET,MCRSTUS1)
EIA_SEARCH(PET,F000000)These are independent searches: world series, a US crude-inventory code fragment, and US crude first-purchase-price codes. In live checks, short terms and code fragments found useful matches when longer phrases returned no rows.
The search is not documented as a natural-language query engine. Do not assume all-word, phrase, wildcard or Boolean matching. An empty table means that query returned no rows, not that EIA lacks the requested data. Shorten the query, try a distinctive code fragment or select a different source. The 50-row cap also means a broad result table is not an exhaustive catalogue.
From search to analysis
Copy the complete code from a matching row into EIA(code). Search returns metadata, not the underlying observations or their verified date range. Load the chosen series and inspect EXTRACT(S,"summary") before modeling.
Choose geography, product definition, units and frequency deliberately. Do not use an annual series as monthly observations, infer that a quarterly match lacks a monthly counterpart, or substitute a US measure for a world measure without explanation.
